Geoff Boucher of the Los Angeles Times reports that Rage Against the Machine, the seminal L.A. band that made heavy music into political manifesto, will reunite after a seven-year lull for one show as the headliners at the 2007 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

L.A. Times' sources say Rage, which played the main stage at the first Coachella in 1999, will be joined by other familiar faces for the eighth edition of the festival, which covers three days this year and begins April 27: Red Hot Chili Peppers, which headlined in 2003, are back, as is Bjork, who topped the bill in 2002.

Organizers were mum this weekend and it was not clear which day Rage or the other acts were slotted to play; that announcement is expected in the next few days. Other acts expected in the eclectic lineup: Arcade Fire, Interpol, Willie Nelson, The Roots, Manu Chao, The Decemberist, Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, Crowded House, Air, Tiesto and Kings Of Leon.

Tickets go on sale Saturday, via Ticketmaster. Three-day passes will cost about $250 and there will be a limited number of single-day passes available.

Robert Lowe Joined Candlemass

It's well known that Solitute Aeternus are big fans and friends with swedish doomsters Candlemass. Now they share a singer also!

Candlemass issued the following post:
"After months of auditions it is now official who replaces Messiah Marcolin in Candlemass. Robert Lowe, well known for his work with Solitute Aeternus, is the man who killed all the competition and showed that he beyond doubt is the most capable man for the job. A worthy successor!!

"Robert will still be fronting Solitute Aeternus, but since there's a whole ocean between the bands, we feel that this is a great solution that is very beneficial for everybody. The mighty voice from Dallas, Texas is thrown into the fire immediately and is starting the vocal work on the new album in a matter of days. Candlemass are sure that the words 'amazing' and 'incredible' will be used to describe the result! We would also like to thank all the gifted singers who applied for the job. Many talents from all over the world have been heard. We are sure that they will continue to be heard for a long time, but not in Candlemass. The band have finally found the ideal replacement for Messiah MarcolinRobert Lowe! The new album will KILL!!"

Solitute Aeternus guitarist John Perez has issued the following update via the band's MySpace page:

"Robert is joining Candlemass as their new lead singer. We're not joking. We're also letting everyone know that nothing has changed in Solitute Aeternus and Robert will continue on with Solitute Aeternus as well.

Our live touring schedule is very minimal and we in the band see no conflict whatsoever with this situation. I personally support the decision 100%. It's all about the music to all of us and this is a chance for Robert to be involved in making some more great music outside of Solitute Aeternus. Why not, right? Leif Edling has been a friend of mine for many years and the decision has been made between both bands with utmost respect from the Candlemass camp. Robert is still 100% committed to continuing on with Solitute Aeternus as we would normally have continued onward. He can't escape it just like myself as it's in is brain and blood. I know that the next Candlemass album will sound unbelievable to my ears as I'm both a fan of the band and Robert's vocals so speaking for myself, I'll win out by getting free copy of the new album (on vinyl and CD, please)! Ha!

Seriously, this will be a great opportunity for Robert and we all wish him and Candlemass great success together.

Don't worry, Solitute Aeternus will do another record and continue to play live as much as our personal schedules will allow. Look for more new on the Candlemass webpage with regard to their new album and live schedule for this year!"

Christopher Lee, the Oldest Metalhead

Acting veteran Christopher Lee has launched a music career at the age of 84 - releasing a CD of songs including a heavy metal track. The Lord Of The Rings star is convinced he is the oldest rocker to record an album.

He says of Revelation, "I really believe that when people hear this CD they will say, 'Yes he really can sing.' And it is a unique recording. As far as I know no other man of my age has sung on an album."

And Lee believes it will be a hit with young and old fans: "This has to be something that people can connect with. You see the young will connect with the metal version of 'The Toreador March', even though it is sung in French. I'm not singing in heavy metal, but it is still heavy metal."

But Lee has no plans to take his music on tour - insisting, "Not at my age. I don't think I could go through that. I couldn't possibly get up and sing these songs in a live show - my voice would probably be affected."

Some time ago, Lee performed on stage at a European metal festival with two bands, Manowar and Rhapsody!!!

The gods of music, Rush are on studio again. According to a posting on the Rush fan site Power Windows, current rumors suggest that Rush's forthcoming album will be titled either "Snakes and Arrows" or "Snakes and Ladders". This is the 19th studio album for Rush if I am correct.

Rush is nearly finished recording its next studio album, which is expected later this year via Atlantic. The tracks were put to tape at Allaire Studios in upstate New York with co-producer Nick Raskulinecz. "I have never enjoyed the recording process so much, nor been so satisfied with the results," Peart wrote last month on his web site.

Peart previously told Billboard.com some of his lyrics for the new songs were inspired by his motorcycle journeys throughout the United States, chronicled in the recent book "Roadshow: Landscape with Drums".

"Just seeing the power of evangelical Christianity and contrasting that with the power of fundamentalist religion all over the world in its different forms had a big effect on me," he said.

Thanatos guitarists Stephan Gebedi and Paul Baayens have joined forces with former Pestilence/Asphyx-singer Martin Van Drunen, Gorefest drummer Ed Warby and former Houwitser bass player Theo van Eekelen in a brand new project. The as-yet-unnamed band will record a three-track promo CD later this year. "We're simply going to crank out some brutal old-school death metal stuff — nothing more, nothing less!" says Gebedi.

In other Thanatos-related news, the band's guitarist Paul Baayens has joined forces with the revamped Asphyx. The lineup is completed by Martin van Drunen on vocals, Bob Bagchus on drums and Wannes Gubbels on bass. The band will appear at several European festivals during the summer (including the Party.San Open Air festival, which will be held August 9-11, 2007 in Bad Berka, Germany).

Thanatos recently suspended the recording sessions for its fifth full-length album, "Justified Genocide", at Excess studios in Rotterdam, Holland after the group's record label, Greece's Black Lotus Records, announced that it was closing its doors. Three songs from earlier sessions are currently being used as a promo CD to generate interest from new labels. One of the new songs, a rough mix of "March of the Infidels", can be heard at www.myspace.com/thanatos666.

Thanatos's new album is scheduled to feature nine or 10 songs, including "They Feed On Fear", "The Devil's Triangle", "March of the Infidels", "Upwards Spritual Evolution" and "The Netherworld". The artwork will be handled by German artist Timo Wuerz.

Thanatos' fourth CD, "Undead. Unholy. Divine" (2004), was produced by Hans Pieters and the band at Excess and was mastered by Attie Bauw (Judas Priest, Sscorpions, Gorefest).

Ozzy and Zakk talk about new album

By Elric on 1:00 PM

Filed Under:

Ozzy Osbourne has talked at Revolver magazine about the recording of his new ablum and his new home/studio, the newly soundproofed guest house behind his Beverly Hills mansion, which he's outfitted with a mixing desk and a ProTools rig.

"When I made records before, I'd have to get up, get in a cab or car, go to the studio, and wait for everyone to turn up. If you're already inspired before you leave for the studio, you're fucked by the time you get there! But now I have the luxury of working in my own home. I can play the music on my own sound system, and I can lie down in my room and watch my flat-screen TV whenever I like."

The new disc promises to be a rawer and heavier affair unlike "Down To Earth". Recorded with the same band that backed Osbourne on his scattered 2006 Ozzfest dates — Zakk Wylde on guitar, Mike Bordin on drums, and Rob "Blasko" Nicholson on bass — the album has no official producer, although Kevin Churko is serving as the engineer.

"Kevin's working the machines and helping me with the songwriting. He really knows what he's doing with the ProTools, which is good because I can't work the fucking thing. I can barely work a light switch!"

"We just went in and jammed out the riffs, just like how they made "Back in Black" and all the Sabbath records," said Wylde. "I don't need Bob Rock there to tell me what to do, like that 'Vagina Monologues' band Metallica (!!!). When you know where you're going, you don't need to ask for fucking directions! It sounds like classic Ozzy — there's piano ballads, there's an acoustic thing, and then there's the heavy shit. From the beginning, Oz kept saying to me, 'Zakk, we need another "No More Tears" — we've gotta piss all over that fuckin' record. This thing's gotta be able to hang with "Diary of a Madman"!'"

Ozzy adds, "I always try to make a great album. It's not like I go in there and go, 'You know what? I've had a great run — I'm gonna do a piece of shit for my next album!' But to be perfectly truthful to you, "Down to Earth" was just a filler album to me. It did well, and some people liked it, and I loved the ballad on it ['Dreamer']. But this album I put in the same league as 'No More Tears', 'Blizzard of Ozz', and 'Diary'. It's definitely my influence of Sabbath coming out, here and there. But then again, I would have liked to see Sabbath put out an album like this at this stage of the game."

I found some info on the net about the upcoming "Gods Of War" from Manowar.

"Manowar has started to reveal parts of the cover artwork for the band's upcoming album, "Gods of War", which is set to be released on February 23 in Germany (February 26 for the rest of Europe and April 3 for the USA/Canada).

In addition to offering this first taste of what the album cover will look like, the band has revealed a bit more information about the CD concept, including two more songtitles.

"Gods of War" is Manowar's first entry in a cycle of concept albums; each a tribute to a different war god. Opening with the epic piece "Overture to the Hymn of the Immortal Warriors", the tone is set for an album beyond anything Manowar has done before. This album honors Odin — almighty father of the Norse gods — and details the history and exploits of this storied character. His power and wisdom were unmatched among the gods and he is paid tribute with human sacrifice on the battlefield, as heard in the song "The Sons of Odin", the stomping title track "Gods of War" and the storytelling "The Blood of Odin".

Besides the normal jewel-case version, "Gods of War" will also be released as a limited edition in an embossed metal slipcase containing a high grade mediabook bound in leather. Furthermore, this limited edition will feature a bonus DVD with unreleased material detailing the making of this album and some special behind-the-scenes footage. A double-vinyl LP in a gatefold sleeve will also be available."

Tenecious D - The Pick of Destiny (2006)

"Pick of Destiny" is the second work for Tenacious D, the group of insane Jack Black. The new album is called “Pick of Destiny” and substantially it is the history of homonym film that will come out in cinema soon.

The history is simple, Jack Black believes that his destiny is to become a Rock Star, something which will not achieve never if he remains in his parents house. Thus, he decides to pray to Dio (!), who guides him in order to find Kyle and the Pick of Destiny. And together, Black and Kyle, challenge the Devil in a Rock competition!

"Pick of Destiny" is not a masterpiece but it has much fun. The sticker that says Explicit Content in the cover of "Pick of Destiny" is not accidental.

Musically however Tenacious D have improved. “Pick of Destiny” contains 15 songs that vary from hard rock up to metal. Jack Black shows that his voice can move in all lengths and widths. On the other side, Kyle proves that he knows how to play his instrument. Songs like “Kickapoo”, “Break-In-City”, “Car Chase City” are pieces of perfect rock n roll while “Beelzeboss”, “P.O.D.” and “The Metal” are songs with enough humour hard riffs.

"Pick of Destiny" is not a monument in rock history but surely it is an album that will cheer you up with some really good hard rock music.
