To celebrate the Halloween release of their new 5 song EP "Revenger", aggressive punk/rock/metal band Mongrel is offering a free download of "Scum" the lead off track from the new release at band's site with the entire EP along with the artwork available for a limited time as a "name your price" digital download.  All 5 songs from the EP are also available on the bandcamp site for streaming play.

"'Scum' is based on a true story unfortunately, and is about not feeling that justice has been done, so the victim turns vigilante...essentially the ultimate revenge" stated Mongrel guitarist Adam Savage, "it just seemed like the perfect song to start off the new EP with."

Savage states, "the EP is a great way to introduce the steps forward we've taken with the new recordings that we've been working on this year, and gives a taste of what's to come on the new full length album "This Means War" which will be out in early 2010." Savage also makes clear that all of the songs on "Revenge" are exclusive to this EP and will not be on the upcoming full length cd, stating, "We wanted to keep the EP as something special for the fans and not make them re-buy the same songs when the new album comes out."

"Revenge" was recorded by Tim Koukos (Nuclear Assault, Meliah Rage), and mixed by Jeff Wallace (Biohazard, Pro-Pain, End of an Era) and features the following songs:  Scum, Catharsis, Beyond Repair, Butterknife Suicide, and Point a Finger (featuring Tylor Monroe of Scarecrow Hill).

Katatonia Talk The New Album: Night Is The New Day

Jonas Renkse and Anders Nystrom from Katatonia talk about artists that have inspired them and ones that have influenced music on the new album ‘Night is the New Day’ (a huge range including non-metal artists like Red House Painters, David Sylvian, Jeff Buckley, The Cure).

‘Night is the New Day’ is Katatonia’s eighth studio album. It was recorded throughout July 2009  and was co-produced, engineered and mixed by David Castillo. Recording was divided between Studio Mega (for drums) and Ghost Ward Studios, where most recording took place which provided a dose of inspiration from the darker corners of life with it’s choice of location, as Anders describes:

“Broken glass, blood on the walls at the front door to the building and threatening messages written on the elevator - Even excrement and urine on the floor in the basement that makes you wonder if the caretaker is a serial killer himself”

Mastering was completed at Fascination Street Studios (where ‘The Great Cold Distance’ was recorded) with Jens Bogren.

A continuation of the heaviness, depth and  atmosphere of their previous album, ‘Night Is the New Day’ is also a more multi-dimensional effort - waltzing between prog moments, doom, folk and the classic melodic anthems that are the staple of Katatonia’s uncompromising sound, completed by the haunting tones of Jonas Renkse’s vocal journeys of urban and  emotional decay.

Resurrecturis - Fracture - Video

The Italian death outfit, Resurrecturis  recently shot a video from the song Fracture. The song comes form their latest third full album Non Voglio Morire.

Non Voglio Morire, the third album of Resurrecturis, is the first chapter of a strongly autobiographic 2 album project dealing with the two biggest parts of the author's life: art and work.

Therefore “Non Voglio Morire" is a reflection on the character of the artist.

The album title means “I don't want to die" and is a clear reference to the longing for immortality through artistic creation. But it can equally be seen as a vital scream against the slow death of 9 to 5 zombie workingmen.

The Rasmus & Anette Olzon - October & April - Video

Under normal circumstances the name of The Rasmus would have never been mentioned here. However in the latest video, "October & April" features a guest appearance by Nightwish frontwoman Anette Olzon. The video can be viewed below.

In a September 2008 interview with Italy's Musica Metal, The Rasmus singer Lauri Ylonen stated that the idea for the song came to him nine years ago when Tarja Turunen was still the lead singer of Nightwish, but he only got around to recording the track during the sessions for last year's "Black Roses" CD. "I actually asked Tarja, but she said no!" Lauri revealed. "Then I called Anette, and she was like, 'Yeah, I would love to sing a song with you, I'm a big Rasmus fan, actually two years ago before I joined Nightwish, I was singing The Rasmus songs in karaoke bars!' so we went with her."

"October & April" was not included on "Black Roses" because the CD was a concept effort and the song didn't fit in with the overall idea for the album. Instead, the track will make its debut on The Rasmus' "Best of 2001-2009", a compilation of all the hit songs from their four latest albums, including the million-selling "In The Shadows", most of the singles and a few rarities.

Due on November 25, "Best of 2001-2009" features the following track listing:

01. In The Shadows
02. No Fear
03. Guilty (U.S. mix)
04. October & April (featuring Anette Olzon)
05. First Day Of My Life
06. Livin' In A World Without You
07. F-F-F-Falling
08. Chill
09. Immortal
10. Justify
11. Shot
12. Funeral Song
13. Ghost of Love
14. Open My Eyes (acoustic version)
15. In My Life

Rage Reveal New Album Details

German metallers Rage will release their new album, "Strings To A Web", on February 5, 2010 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was recorded at Twilight Hall Studio and was produced by Charlie Bauerfeind (Blind Guardian, Hammerfall). The cover artwork was created by Thomas Ewerhard (Avantasia, Therion), and it shows showing the soundchaser as a spider, caught in a web.

"I am really proud of the album, we hardly ever sounded more inspired and it is an absolute highlight in our career," says founding member, bass player and vocalist Peavy Wagner. Drummer André Hilgers adds, "This albums show all the different faces and characters and I call it the most enormous and multifarious record I ever recorded."

"Strings To A Web" includes melodic and anthemic tracks such as "Into The Light" and "The Beggar's Last Dime", as well as powerful thrashers like "Purified" and "Tomorrow Never Comes". But the heart of the record comes in the shape of the 16-minute masterpiece "Empty Hollow", a progressive fairytale that unites everything Rage is about.

"You can compare 'Empty Hollow' to our 'Lingua Mortis Suite' from the 'Speak Of The Dead' record," says guitarist Victor Smolski. "This song was recorded with an orchestra and is divided into five parts.

"As a band we have discovered a lot of new possibilities and elements, even in Peavy's vocals, my way of playing guitar or the arrangements in André's drumming."

Dayal Patterson of the English magazine Metal Hammer decribed the record as an "intense, frantic and technical assault tempered by clean sung choruses and harmonies!" His spanish collegue Sergi Ramos of Metal Hammer stated, "Everything you love about today's Rage sound plus a dose of old-school thrown in for good measure."

"Strings To A Web" will be released on vinyl, jewelcase and a special limited digibook with bonus material.

Steve Conte of New York Dolls To Release New Album

By Elric on 10:43 PM

To rock and rollers around the globe, the legendary Steve Conte is probably best known as the lead guitarist, songwriter/and backing vocalist in the New York Dolls. Conte is also the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist for a raft of other bands including Crown Jewels, The Contes, and his latest incarnation - Steve Conte & The Crazy Truth.

Sonically, The Crazy Truth lies somewhere between garage rock and punk blues with hints of Latin-soul in a dark, smoky lounge. It's the Stooges and the Stones versus Morphine and Tom Waits. The vibe is best described by Conte as "classic roots with a modern twist."

Lyrically, the songs reflect two decades of life and excess in New York City...the distractions troubled souls move toward to fill the emptiness. Dive bars, gambling, sex and drugs. It's all there, but not celebrated with the traditional macho rock attitude. It's more about redemption.

On The Truth Ain't Pretty, Conte sings, "I'm always putting the last things first, that's why I'm starting out with the second verse," while on The Goods Are Odd he croons "Drag queens, drama queens, future ex-porn stars, we're all looking for lovers with beautiful scars."

Special guests on the album includes David Johansen (New York Dolls) on harmonica, Catherine Russell (David Bowie) and Nicki Richards (Madonna) on backing vocals, plus Danny Ray (Sylvain Sylvain/Johnny Thunders), Kiku Collins (Beyonce) Tom Timko (Stevie Wonder) on horns.

The album was mixed by the legendary Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Keith Richards) and mastered by Richard Dodd (Tom Petty, Green Day).
Tracklist:

1. This Is The End
2. Gypsy Cab
3. Texas T
4. The Goods Are Odd
5. Get Off
6. The Truth Ain't Pretty
7. Her Highness
8. Busload of Hope

After many weeks of hard work the new Vader's official videoclip for "Never Say My Name" track (taken from "Necropolis" album) is finally ready to unleash. Inspired by Patrick Graham's bestselling book "L'Évangile Selon Satan" (translation: "The Gospel According to Satan"), the clip tells an alternate story of the death of a messiah who curses humanity before his death on the cross and chooses life in Hell instead of Heaven.

Perhaps because of its "controversial" title and content, this book is not available in the U.S. in English, but a French version can be ordered from Canada. The clip was produced by Polish Inbornmedia company, who did our two previous videoclips "Helleluyah" and "The Witcher". The clip was directed by Maciej Pawełczyk and Radek Wikiera.

I can't say that it is any different from what Atreyu used to play all this time but here is what frontman Alex Varkatzas told The Pulse of Radio.

"It's gonna be awesome," he said. "It's gonna be a little more eclectic, I think a lot heavier, and my vocals especially are gonna be a lot more aggressive on this record. I think we've learned a lesson over the course of our four full-lengths, and I think this is gonna be the perfect blend of all of them."

Europe - Last Look at Eden (2009)

Europe, probably the biggest Swedish band, three years after the amazing Secret Society, hit the shelves  again with their latest release Last Look at Eden.

From the self titled song, Last Look at Eden starts exactly from the point where Secrete Society ended. Modern rock with dark melodies. However Last Look at Eden is not a Secret Society part 2 and that is clear right from the start.

Unfortunately is less heavy and dark. On the other hand the compositions of the songs are, probably, more matured than everything else Europe did so far.  Tempest voice is perfect in every song as it was expect but what I really enjoyed is the melody parts from Norum and Michaelli.

Gonna Get Ready and Catch That Plane are more groovy  while New Love In Town, U Devil U and Only Young Twice have all the elements that made Europe famous two decades ago. On the other hand there are some weaker but easy listening songs like The Beast, Mojito Girl and No Stone Untruned.

Last Look at Eden combines Europe's two eras. The new style that they adapted after their "reunion" with a tribute to their old days. It seems that after all this time the flame is still burning in this band.

A Storm of Light - Tempest - Video

Brooklyn, NY's doom/post rock experimentalists A Storm of Light recently shot a new video for the song "Tempest", the third track off their upcoming new full-length, Forgive Us Our Trespasses.

The video was shot in HD at an undisclosed location in Brooklyn and directed by guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Josh Graham. The hauntingly textured, black and white performance video reflects the lyrics of the song, which essentially revolve around the inevitable contamination of the air, sea and earth.

Said Graham of "Tempest," "This is one of the heavier songs on the new record, and we really thought this would make a good video. It's a performance video with a twist. Over the course of the song we basically deteriorate into the chaotic footage of a dying planet."

Forgive Us Our Trespasses is scheduled for release on Tuesday, September 22nd in the US via Neurot Recordings. The follow-up to the band's critically acclaimed debut, And We Wept The Black Ocean Within, finds its power through a dense bringing together of melodies, moods and textures, ensuring that while things are as heavy and cataclysmic as fans would expect, the devastating effects rely on interwoven melodies and graceful shifts in timbre, instead of a stream of identikit riffs. "I'm really happy with the progression the band has made on this record," said Graham. I think we moved into more dynamic and orchestrated territory while still keeping the bulldozer heaviness intact. I can't wait to play this stuff live."

Swedish black metallers Dark Funeral recently shot a video for “My Funeral" the fist song off the band's long-awaiting upcoming new full-length Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus.  Click read more to view the uncut version of the film

Press release follows: “My Funeral” is one of the three (of nine) heavier, non-blastbeat driven songs recorded for the new offering. The video was shot in and around an old mental asylum, an environment which, said guitarist Lord Ahriman, "suited the video theme perfectly." "My Funeral" was produced by Standard Film Team (Umeå, Sweden). Due to the graphic nature of the video, there are two versions.

Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus is scheduled for release in the US later this year via Regain Records (11/18 in Europe). Said Ahriman of the new record: "We decided to go for a rawer sound this time; not as crystal clear and perhaps polished as our last album [Attera Totus Sanctus], but no worries. The production still holds the high quality that you would come to expect from us!" While remaining true to their roots, Dark Funeral have taken a great step forward in the evolution of their brand of fine Swedish black metal. Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus is, from beginning to end, a hell ride you don't want to miss.
