It Dies Today - Sirens (2006)

The new work of It Dies Today is called “Sirens” and it just arrived to my hands. I cannot say that I was impatient to listen to this album neither that I like particularly that kind of music.

From first notes of “Sirens” I realized that will be a “long night” hearing. It Dies Today play a type of nu-metal and nu-metal has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the metal scene. “Sirens” begins with “A Constant Reminder”. The song begins with and drums have the main role but immediately the vocals change in gay-emo style at the refrain part. And somewhere here the interest for “Sirens” ends. The remaining songs not only are in same style, but they are precisely the same. Non-existent guitars, none solo and continuous alternations between something like brutal and gay-emo style phonetics

Indeed, music dies today becasue of such releases!

Skid Row - Revolutions Per Minute (2006)

I imagine that everyone knows Skid Row, the group that became famous by writing songs like “Youth Gone Wild”, “18 And Life” and “Monkey Business” and especially by the voice of Sebastian Bach.

Revolutions Per Minute” is their second release since their reunion (without Sebastian Bach). Their choice was to completely change their music style and not to self-consumed in their past. Although the idea was good, the result, unfortunately, is really bad.

Skid Row choice was to release an album for the masses and not to do something qualitative. “Revolutions Per Minute” starts like a garage style album, then it turns into something like punk, then it changes again in alternative rock and finally transforms into country and rockabilly sounds!!!!!

Nevertheless, the effort of singer Johnny Solinger is remarkable. He ideally adapts his voice in each song. However this is not enough, since the whole album is addressed to young college boys.

Rage Gig Cancelled

By Elric on 11:14 PM 27 November 2006

Bad news for the greek fans of Rage. Once again greek promoters show how untrustworthy they are and that they only care about the money. Every gig in Greece are overbooked and overpriced! And now, even the bands don't trust greek promoters.

But in the end the big loser is the greek fun, and I have to mention that greeks are crazy about metal and rock. Any way... this is the reason and the public apology that Sold Out Promotion issued about the gig cancelation.

"As a result to the cancellation of the GOD DETHRONED and DEW-SCENTED shows, we are sad to announce the cancellation of the RAGE shows in Greece which were planned for January 26 and 27, 2007.

After the cancellation of the first two shows, Dragon Productions, which represents the three bands, and RAGE, due to lack of trust to our company, decided to cancel the Greek RAGE shows.

We admit we have made wrong decisions due to our enthusiastic character, lack of experience, and romantic views on heavy metal, but our primal intention is, was and will be the three parts involved, fans, band and company, to be satisfied with the result of the shows. We found out that this point of view is too romantic to be true because of the economic result it would bring (GOD DETHRONED, DEW-SCENTED). This is the reason why we discussed the fees of the bands but Dragon Productions and the bands wanted either all or nothing. In the RAGE shows we had to face our punishment for the cancellations of the two other shows. We didn't get the chance to prove to the agency representing the band whether we would have kept our parts of the deal in terms of payments and organisation, instead they decided to cancel the shows with the consent of the band even though we made sure that there would have been promoters to do the second show who were willing to give half the money we would give to the band as a fee. On these bases the shows were cancelled due to lack of trust to Sold Out Promotion.

"With the cancellation of RAGE, our company's name from our first steps in the field, is being trashed to unprofessional and unserious and we are not willing to tolerate such behaviour. We are already exposed for example to the venues we already had booked for the shows, which means economic loss for them too and us since we are working with them. Our media partners also get a big part of this sort of exposure since they have trusted us with their support.

After having cancelled the shows in Thessaloniki we tried to find other promoters to do the shows there since we wouldn't be able to support them properly as we found out after our first shows with Ross The Boss, because we come from Athens. GOD DETHRONED and DEW-SCENTED were not an option for promoters in Thessaloniki. RAGE had the option to play in Thessaloniki for less money, but they chose not to.

We admit our mistakes but we will not tolerate such criticism from someone who has never worked with us in fact, but only over email and phone.

We are sorry most of all for the fans who were anxious to see RAGE in a headlining show in Greece, and didn't have enough of them on their previous appearance in which they were supporting PAIN OF SALVATION (2003). We will try to state our place in the future. We know we stand in a very difficult place from now on but we will try to face our bad reputation due to the three cancellations, which were caused because of the re-negotiation of the economic fees we asked for (GOD DETHRONEDDEW-SCENTED) and the cancellation of RAGE which came from Dragon Productions and the band based on the lack of trust and not the renegotiation of the fees."

As you can see I have added a poll section, called "Poll Of The Month". It is powered by dPolls.com and I found it pretty cool ;). Anyway, first question: "How many CDs do you buy per month ?". Some say that they are too expensive, some say that they prefer to download free music and others they buy CDs to support the bands. What do you do?

Gosmack - IV (2006)

By Elric on 11:21 AM

Maybe the Bostonian quartet still not become the big name in music industry, but with each work they release, they prove that they are a hard working band and they can hold their place in hard rock music.

IV” is the fourth studio full work (5 with the EP “The Other Side”) for Godsmack. The music of Godsmack constitutes of two elements. The great voice of Sully Enra and the incredibly tied up and hard music-play of the rest. This is a result that these guys are a long time together and that they work hard in studio (their live shows are, also, a proof of this). However their sound has not changed a bit all these years and it seems that they ruminate the same things.

Generally, I cannot say that this album has anything original at all. From the title, “IV”, up to the music. In this album Godsmack use the same music recipe as they did all these years. Nevertheless the result is enough good.

Tied up songs, heavy riffs and above all the voice of Sully Enra which is extremely good. The “IV” begins with “Livin' in a Sin” and “Speak”, two songs in the classic style of Godsmack while in “The Enemy” the influences from Metallica are evident. The follow-up songs are a mixture of slow and hard songs but generally the style does not change particularly. The “Voodoo Too” (the sequel of “Voodoo”) is good enough even if, some will consider it as an offence against their past.

With the release of “IV”, Godsmack will try to move one step higher in the musical scene. The think, however, is that “IV” has nothing to offer in a fan of Godsmack. On the other hand, someone that listens to Godsmack for the first time, he will enjoy the album for sure and he will start seathing their previous works.

Dark Tranquillity Finishes Recording New Album

By Elric on 6:20 PM 22 November 2006

The Swedish melodic death metallers Dark Tranquillity just finished the recording of their new album.

Mikael Stanne (vocals) issued the following update in their official website:

"I can´t believe it....We made it! It´s done and there is nothing I can do about it. Just got back from the studio where everything is now shipped off to Denmark where Tue Madsen will perform his magicky magic on the things we´ve been working on these last 7 weeks.

I just finished the last vocal lines a couple of days ago and it feels sweet. As always with recordings there is alot of stress and selfdoubt but being in a more than familiar environment in Martin's studio (Rogue) has helped tremendously. The recordings have not only been smooth and focused but the overall feeling that we are creating something amazing has really driven us through this.

It turned out so different and diverse that the hardest thing for me now is to find a suitable title for the whole thing. How can i sum up in a title something that is everything and nothing, grounded and out there, intorvert and extra-terrestial all at the same time?

Well, keep watching this space and I will let you know soon enough.

Right now I am just so glad it´s done. Anders did a fantastic job grinding and beating (off) in the studio, Micke has delivered some really crushing bass, Martin and Niklas have really outdone themselves with great riffs and truly outstanding solos and Martin B has poured alot of misery and anxiety into his soundscapes.

Now all we do is wait for the mix, and this being our first time mixing out of house so to speak we are really excited to hear what the hell we´ve been up to!

Cheers,

/Mikael"

Seventh Wonder - Waiting In The Wings (2006)

Last year when I listened to their debut album "Become" I was amazed by the musical talent of these guys. Although I left with the filling that something was missing. Fast forward to present and Seventh Wonder just released their second full length album, called "Waiting In The Wings".

From the first tunes of "Waiting In The Wings" I realized what the missing element was a really good voice. But Seventh Wonder managed to replace their old singer with Tommy Karevik and the result is just amazing. So far, Seventh Wonder was an unpolished diamond. With Tommy Karevik's voice the band just shines!

The album starts with "Star of David", probably one of the best songs for 2006. Power, technic, melody and amazing solos and Mr.Karevik's voice. He is using his voice like an intstrument. Although the following songs are not as good as "Star of David" (if they were, then this would be the album of the decade) but still the are really good. You don't listen to songs like "Taint the Sky" or "Banish the Wicked" every day

I will not say much for the album. This album shows how progressive metal should be. It merges technic and melody, heavy riffs with amazing solos, stanning performance with perfect production. And in the end your not tired of all these but you just want more. Everything is perfectly balanced.

A must buy for the friends of progressive music.

Leatherwolf on search for new singer

Leatherwolf released new album this year, called "World Asylum". But a tour for the promotion of "World Asylum" will not follow, since Wade Black left the band.

The band issued the following announcement:

"We would like to thank Wade for his contributions to Leatherwolf and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. There are no hard feelings between both parties. Unfortunately, certain economic realities and the geographical distance between Wade and the rest of the band turned out to be an obstacle too hard to overcome and made working as a unit that much more difficult. We are now looking for someone closer to home, perferably based right here in Southern California. Potential candidates must be able to sing both the Michael Olivieri and Wade Black era songs (guitar abilities a huge plus!), have a valid passport, and be able to go on the road as we have a European tour in the works for spring 2007. Interested parties get in touch with the band via dean.rob@cox.net."

Voivod - Katorz (2006)

"Katorz" is the fourteenth album by the Canadian Heavy Metal band Voivod. The name of the album is phonetic for "quatorze", the French word for fourteen.

First of all, after 22 years Voivod released an album with an almost perfect production, in contrast with the previous 13 albums!!!. The music is Stoner Rock with realy heavy riffs and a dark atmosphere that will occlude your lungs.

The album is solid with equal songs but I believe that it is somehow half complete. The songs could have been worked more.

Probably this is because during the recording of this album, guitarist Denis D'Amour (aka Piggy) died on August 25, 2005 due to colon cancer. The album features tracks previously recorded by him and stored in his computer hard disk.

Europe - Secret Society (2006)

Europe made a name playing pop-rock in the mid-80s. They sold millions of albums with songs like "The Final Countdown" and "Carrie". What many don't know (inlcuding me) is that these guys are still out there and they are still rocking.

In their seventh album "Secret Society", Europe decided to change their style a bit. An amazingly heavy sound took the place of their past soft production. Tempest voice is more powerfull than ever. But the most obvious change is in the guitars section. Sometimes melodic and sometimes realy heavy riffs that remind Led Zeppelin or UFO. Moreover songs like "Let the Children Play", "Love is Not the Enemy" or "Secret Society" are closer to Stoner Rock!!!

More impressive is that the band decided to produce the album entirely themselves and the result is just perfect. Finaly, I have to say that Europe were able to release "Secret Society", an MODERN album full of FRESH and SOLID ideas.

WELL DONE !!!

"The Sons Of Odin" is the prologue to the upcoming album from the Epic/Power Metallers Manowar. The classic artwork, the classic lyrics and the classic music are all here! Everything is expected in this EP.

It has two live tracks, an intro like song "The Ascension" and "King Of Kings". And three studio tracks."Odin" which is a symphonic song, "Gods of War" a realy good epic song. The EP closes with "The Sons of Odin" a classic Manowar song with epic feeling (again). Songs that talk about swords in the wind, blood of enemies and Odin.

We have heard that from Manowar 30.000.000 times before...I will not spend any money on this EP, I'll just wait for the album.
