Matt, Ripper and Pyramaze Statements About Barlow Rejoining Iced Earth

By Elric on 8:33 AM 24 December 2007

There's a lot of speculation about Matt Barlow's return to Iced Earth, but let's sum it up. Matt left Iced Earth to join the cops (sic!) and discover his self. Jon Schaffer hired Ripper because he wanted a big name to increase the sales of the band, although Ripper's voice and skill doesn't match the band's style. Matt wanted to return to music industry but he couldn't go back to Iced Earth becuase they were at the middle of a recording, so he joined Pyramaze. After the recording of the album Jon kicked out Ripper (and the bassist from Ripper's other band!!) and hired Matt again. Pyramaze thought that they found a permanet lead singer but Matt waved his hand and left them, although he feels the obligation to do one studio album with them.

You can read everyone's statements below.

Singer Tim "Ripper" Owens has released a statement regarding his surprising departure from Iced Earth three months after the release of the group's latest album, "Framing Armageddon - Something Wicked Part I".

Owens says:
"First off I would like to wish Jon Schaffer and the guys in Iced Earth much success.
Yes, this all was just horrible timing, and I don't think it was handled in the best way, coming two weeks before Christmas! But it is the best for me and Iced Earth.

I really need to move on and do other things. I really want to get Beyond Fear out there and I'm working on some other projects as well.
Things happen for a reason, and yes, the winds of change are upon us and that is what I needed!
The one thing I ask is to just leave it all alone.
I would like from this moment on to leave Iced Earth in the past and move forward, so I will no longer discuss IE!
Like I said, I wish Jon and his family and the guys in IE the best of luck and a merry Christmas... Now let's move on and talk about the future!
Thank you and keep it heavy."

Guitarist Michael Kammeyer of the Danish metallers Pyramaze has issued the following statement regarding the recent announcement that the group's lead vocalist Matt Barlow was returning to front his previous band Iced Earth as the replacement for Tim "Ripper" Owens:

"As most of you know by now, Matt has joined forces with his old band Iced Earth again. Like any other metal music lover, we in Pyramaze are excited about the prospect of Jon and Matt working together again. But this reunion has created some speculations in the metal community towards Matt's future in Pyramaze, and I can put all the Pyra-fans at ease, and tell you that Matt is still a full member of Pyramaze, and the only change is that now you'll get Matt in a double dose.

"I'm happy to tell you that last week Matt's wife gave birth to a healthy little boy. Because of this happy event sleep has become an 'elusive guest' for Matt and his wife, but as soon as the Barlow family regains some 'normality' and sleep is back on the menu, Matt will prepare a statement for you.

"The recording of our new album has not been delayed, and dates for our vocal recording and final mix/master session are still the same.

"That's it for now, and the next time we've got news, it will be Matt's statement."

Matt Barlow has issued the following update commenting his return to Iced Earth:

"Brothers and Sisters!

I'm sure that you are all well aware of things that are happening within Iced Earth, and a statement from me is well overdue. To that, I can only say that I am sorry for the delay, but there is good reason. Last week, following Jon's announcement, my wife gave birth to our second son. Everything is well, but of course, those of you who are parents know how taxing the first week can be. During that time, after all things had begun to settle, I realized that there are a lot of things on my plate. At this point, I needed to address them. As you know, family always comes first. Of course, Jon knows that and understands my decision to leave Iced Earth four years ago. My wife and I wanting a family was a huge factor. Family, is also the reason for my return. There is a kinship that goes beyond the obvious. I will speak of that later.

First, I feel that I need to acknowledge my friend Michael of Pyramaze. If not for his inquiry and persistance in asking me to be a member of that band, I may not have realized how much I have missed and been missed within the metal community. In recent days, however, I have come to realize that my participation in Pyramaze cannot go beyond the recording of the bands current work. This is due in part, to the fact that I can't be all places at all times. Michael and I have discussed this, and have come to an understanding. I know that the future success of Pyramaze will not be based solely on individual performances of band members, but in the song writing and total performance of the band, which is excellent. I know that I will give everything I have to the record and will support Pyramaze on a lot of other levels.

Let me proceed on the topic of kinship. For a great portion of our lives, Jon and I dedicated our selves to creating music that pleased, angered, saddened, and inspired. Though it can be argued that my contribution was limited, I always felt very proud of what we accomplished with every song. Whether a song was about a true love, a best friend, a ghost, a devil, or a savior; The songs that Jon wrote gave me the desire to engage each one on a very personal level. When Jon and I began to discuss the future of Iced Earth and his feeling on it's success or failure, he conveyed to me the desire to rediscover the passion of the songs that made Iced Earth so very special to so many people. In my journey of the last several years, I've had time to acknowledge that there are great stories yet to be told. Moreover, I have recognized my desire to be a part of those stories. As mentioned above, there are obvious time constraints where it relates to family, career, and music. One of those issues has already been addressed.

As for my career in law enforcement, it will continue as normal. Without going into specific detail, Jon and I will work on recording on my time between shifts. As Jon stated before, live performances will be more limited but grander in fashion. We will do our very best to get to the metal masses as often as possible. Jon understands that this schedule will be tougher to work with, but feels that it will be the best for the fans in the long run. There will be critics, no doubt. It has recently come to my attention that some people don't like the police ;-) Let's see if opinion can change on that issue!

As for the music, I will bring to Iced Earth the best performance possible. That has always been my desire, and I'm really excited to work with Jon and the guys again, to give you the best metal possible. If you think you're ready... let's do this!

Matt Barlow "

Saana - Warrior of Light Update

Timo Tolkki has issued the following update on his upcoming classical rock opera, "Saana - Warrior of Light Part 1: Journey to Crystal Island":

"I have been mixing Saana at Sonic Pump in Helsinki for 4 days now. First 3 days went pretty much just to get all the material from several different sources to the same place. It ended up being 123 tracks, which is way bigger than any Stratovarius session. That means it's gonna be hard to mix.
Anyways, I am getting the vibe and emotion and build up the mixes from emotional point of view.
I have played some stuff to some people and they have started to cry. When I asked what did you feel, the answer was that there seems to be so much feelings and emotions in the music that it just makes you cry. The listener has no choice because it is actually like when you are watching a film and you know "those moments" when you feel like crying or touched.
Well I have a big task to fit 123 tracks to stereo. I will do surround mixes to at the same time.
My sleeping rythm is just completely fucked up. I wake up at 4 in the morning and cant get more sleep. So then I head to studio and start working. Weird.
I have learned so much from this project that has taken one year from my life. I don't think I will ever be able to look at music at the same level. The singers were so much in tune with their feelings that it was just so easy to get great performances. I have some amazing stuff there like Jennifer singing very touching line and when she stops singing you hear this sobbing. This has never happened before. She requested that all the vocals must be done the way that she lies on her back. I have never seen that before. She also had a goldfish with her that she kept there all the time. His name is Giacomo and it was a bit weird to have it there all the time and take it back to her place.
Anyway all is proceeding as planned. Try to relax folks..it's XMas time. I can't, but I head for some warm place after it's ready."

March Metal Day Festival 2008 line up announced. Read the press release below:

"MMD returns in 2008 - more dynamic and alternative than ever before with more energy, more games, more activities all set to 12 ear-pounding hours of non-stop music.

With headliners Nightwish already announced, MMD festival is set to be an event not to be missed in 2008. The same stage will also host Tristania and the Greek band Hannibal (known for their appearance at the Scorpions Fest in 2007) joined on stage by Roland Grapow (ex-Helloween).

On stage two we're featuring US-based favorite Nevermore, alongside legendary hell-raisers Sodom from Germany.

One surprise feature at the MMD Festival will be a rerun of the legendary Iron Maiden-Metallica feud, which will be settled once and for all in a head-to-head battle between The Iron Maidens, the famous all-American, all-female Iron Maiden cover band - and Orion, the official Metallica tribute band from Italy. And for the first time in Greece we'll have 12 hours of non-stop metal music on both festival stages.

And this year we're coming back at you with more activities including video, strategy and action games with prizes to be won.

The venue for MMD '08 remains the same - the Olympic Fencing Arena - outfitted with special acoustics offering the best mind-shattering sound, and massive space for our activities, including ample parking space. The arena is also easily found via public transport.

MMD wants to thank the thousands that participated in our online poll for the bands that you want to see perform at MMD 08. This is just what we need to bring you exactly what you want to see and hear and we want to hear what you have to say. Make your voice heard at our new site where you'll get frequent updates on everything to do with the festival and other events we've got planned.

MMD '08 is more than just a name change, and we're here to stay. We're proving that it's the most innovative ground breaking festival around and will only get better as time goes on.

More details can be found at our site: www.mmdfestival.gr , where you can pre-register for activities and get the digs on where you can buy tickets right now at special pre-sale prices.

And there's more. Coming at you in '08 we've announced one of our faves - Epica - on December 14th in Athens and December 16th in Thessaloniki with another date planned sometime in late January or early February. So watch out, and visit us often cause there's more in store after the festival that'll leave your ears ringing 'till we do it all over again."

Barlow Rejoins Iced Earth

"Hello Dear Friends!

Once again the winds of change are upon us, and this time I can say that I am very happy about the result.

While out on the European tour I had several in depth discussions with many loyal Iced Earth fans. A common theme of these discussions was how much Matt is missed. I agreed with the fans that things were not the same and that it was a very special period in Iced Earth's history.

When I heard several months ago that Matt was going to be doing a project in music again, I was thinking about contacting him and seeing what his intentions were. I didn't act on this because I was so focused on the writing of the new epic, and frankly, it just didn't seem realistic.

Well, after getting out on the road and speaking with many of you directly, I decided to call Matt and see how he was doing and if he was interested in working together again. I am proud to say that he is coming back to Iced Earth and we will be getting back to work in the studio very soon.

Matt will be singing on Part 2 of the Something Wicked concept CD and we will be looking forward to getting out on tour and delivering a series of Iced Earth shows that will rival any in the history of the band. And there will be a proper DVD filmed from this period, something we've all been waiting for.

I want you all to know that it was you who made this a reality. I have missed Matt's presence onstage and in my personal life in a big way over the past few years, so I appreciate your honesty in our discussions. It did help me realize the decision to move forward with pursuing this. The fans have spoken and we have delivered!

You true fans know that I'm a straight shooter, I say what I mean and mean what I say. And though I value your opinions greatly, you must believe that this is a decision that comes completely from the heart and is not motivated by anything other than what feels the best for Iced Earth. This is the way that things have always been dealt with, for better or for worse, but always honestly and from the heart.

Tim Owens is a great and talented singer and I wish the best for him and his future on a personal and professional level.

There will be more news soon as to further developments and plans. This will push back the release of Part 2 a bit. Not because we couldn't be ready to record in time, but because of a new addition to Matt's family in early 2008!

I am very happy to announce that Iced Earth is truly BACK!

Have a great holiday season. We'll be in touch very soon with more details.

Led Zeppelin Reunion Live Report

By Elric on 8:25 AM 12 December 2007

Chris Lehourites with the Associated Press has filed this report on the historic reunion of Led Zeppelin in London:

After that performance, Led Zeppelin really must go on tour.

The reunited rock 'n' roll legends were superb Monday in their first full concert in nearly three decades, mixing in classics like "Stairway to Heaven'' and "Black Dog'' with the thumping "Kashmir'' and the hard-rocking "Dazed and Confused.''

The band's three surviving members - singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist-keyboardist John Paul Jones - were joined by the late John Bonham's son Jason on drums.

And it was the newest member of the band that was given the honor of kicking off the sold-out benefit show, pounding out the beat before the others joined in on a near-perfect "Good Times Bad Times''.

After the lights went down at the O2 Arena, newsreel footage of the band arriving in Tampa, Fla., for a 1973 performance was projected onstage. Then Bonham jumped in, soon to be joined by the rest.

They followed that with "Ramble On'', and with it destroyed all rumors that the 59-year-old Plant could no longer reproduce his trademark wail.

With his button-down shirt mercifully buttoned up, Plant roamed the stage belting out hit after hit, rarely giving his critics anything to work with.

But Page showed he still has the touch as well. Besides ripping out his patented riffs all night, he put the spotlight on himself when the band played the bluesy "In My Time of Dying''.

With his left hand moving freely up and down the neck of his guitar and the metal slide wrapped around one of his fingers, Page effortlessly played a song that's not easy to master.

Page and Plant later combined to open "Nobody's Fault But Mine'', a song that starts with another classic Page riff and then gets help from Plant mimicking the same sounds.

Still, it was Bonham who may have been the star of the show. At 41, he is older than his father was - 32 - when he choked to death on his own vomit in 1980.

Bonham's flawless performance and driving beat even made the other members of the band watch in awe at the end of "Black Dog''.

After "The Song Remains the Same'', Plant screamed: "Jason Bonham, drums! Come on!''

The 16-song set list produced few surprises. They did many of the songs expected, such as "No Quarter'' and "Trampled Under Foot'', and the entire show lasted a bit more than two hours, mainly because of encores "Whole Lotta Love'' and "Rock and Roll''.

The band also played "For Your Life'' live for the first time.

"It's quite peculiar to imagine ... to think about creating a dynamic evening choosing from 10 different albums. There are certain songs that have to be there, and this is one of them,'' Plant said in introducing "Dazed and Confused''.

When Page's solo started midway through the song, many in the audience were wondering whether the guitar virtuoso would resort to his old tricks.

But after only a few seconds, the 63-year-old Page turned his back to the crowd and walked nonchalantly toward his amp. Once there, he pulled a cello bow off the top, and the fans again went wild.

They followed that with "Stairway to Heaven'', the band's staple song, which many hardcore fans were hoping would be dropped from the set.

But the crowd still loved it, with many standing to dance as Page played on his double-necked guitar.

A few lighters even popped up, but they were mostly replaced by digital cameras.

Plant may have struggled a bit on the early verses - his voice a tad raspy - but it was hardly reason to believe the band wasn't ready for anything.

Fans are hoping to get to hear them do it again, and soon.

Though this show is supposed to be one-time event, there have been rumors that if all went well, it would kick off a world tour.

Plant seemed to play down those rumors, saying he plans to tour with bluegrass star Alison Krauss, but Monday's performance will only add to the fervor of the fans to see them play more gigs.

"The whole idea of being on a cavalcade of merciless repetition is not what it's all about,'' Page told The Sunday Times leading up to the performance.

The show was Led Zeppelin's first full set since 1980. Robbed of "Bonzo's'' pulsing drums, the band decided it couldn't go on and split up on Dec. 4, 1980.

Tickets for the show, a benefit for the late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, were won in an Internet lottery. Proceeds are to go to the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund, which provides scholarships to universities in the United States, Britain and Turkey.

"Hey Ahmet, we did it!'' Plant screamed after "Stairway.''

Monday's concert wasn't the first Led Zeppelin reunion. The band played together in 1985 at Live Aid, and joined forces again three years later - with Jason Bonham on drums - to play at the 40th anniversary concert for Atlantic Records.

At their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 1995, they teamed up with other musicians for another short set.

The show was originally scheduled for Nov. 26, but was postponed until Monday because Page injured the little finger on his left hand.

There were several opening acts rotating across the stage, mainly hosted by former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman.

Paul Rodgers, Keith Emerson and Foreigner got the biggest cheers.

Plant said he was told that people from 50 countries made their way to London for the show.

"I can't believe people would come from 50 countries for that,'' Page said after pointing out a banner in the crowd that read "Hammer of the Gods.''

They came, and they saw a show that hopefully won't be the last.

Forbidden Reunion With Holgan On Drums

"Howdy everybody, I'm currently in Stockholm, Sweden, after just returning from a highly successful and awesome string of dates in Italy with my bitches, Meldrum. I'd like to say a big thank you and hello to all our friends and fans who came to the shows, you guys are great! I must admit, your women are beautiful, but I had to travel all the way to Italy to eat the worst pizza ever. Not once, but twice! But another thank you must go out to our promoter/hosts, Gianrico and the lovely Fiorenza.
And, I do need to thank my Meldrum bitches for taking such good care of me over there. I was like a spoiled kid most of the time, so my heart and thanks go out to them for lookin' out for me.
And let me tell ya, a week on the road turns them bitches HORNY! Their palpable lust for Mandingo was replaced with one for Rocco Siffredi, and one could only imagine the pillow fights and hot-oil rubdowns that occured in their hotel rooms on a nightly basis. That's what girlies do every night, right? Hee hee. I don't know, but these bitches were smart, they got me my own room every night, probably cuz the only thing I do louder than play drums is SLEEP. Could well be that was why...
So now, we have another couple of shows in Sweden, then I have to go back early to play one DethkloK show at an undisclosed location in the States.
Speaking of DethkloK, what a blast that quick tour was. Getting to play with the MASTERFUL musicians that were Misters Kenneally, Beller, and Small, wow, talk about heaven. I was definitely the SCRUB musician on that stage every night, believe me. And, say what you want about the show, I love it, and the live show was waaaaay cool! I had to crack up during the set quite a few times in the beginning, 'til I got used to some of the dialogue. Anyway, I think the live show is really sharp, and I strongly suggest all metalheads check us out if we come near your town in 2008.
As for 2008, it too will be pretty chaotic, and one of the things I'm most looking forward to is being a part of the 'reunion of the year', in my opinion, which involves the return of the mighty Forbidden. As I understand, Mr. Bostaph has prior commitments, so my Forbidden brethren reached out to me and I was very honored to say yes. I'm sure more details will come from their camp soon, but I just wanted to make a quick mention of it right here. I'll keep everyone posted with some updates soon.
As for a DVD update, I thank everyone's impatience in this matter, and yes, I KNOW I promised it's release months ago, but as I'm a bit of a control-freak (only in this matter, I assure you), and this schedule of mine over the past few months has been pretty brutal, I've just needed all this time to get it done right. It won't be perfect, but it will be something I can be proud of, and hopefully something you'll be proud to have in your collection.
Also, a GIANT THANK YOU to all who have purchased a GENESHIRT, whether manly or girlie. WOW! We've just re-ordered, due to selling out of most of the first pressing. Very cool, and quite unbelievable, guys, so again, thank you!
Now, as everyone in the metal world knows, the holidays for all of us now are forever bittersweet. With rememberences for the loss of Chuck and Dime, and now with the untimely passing of our new brother Vitek, the holiday cheer might not seem so, I don't know...cheery. But, I'm sure a crestfallen feeling would be the last thing any of these gentlemen would want from us, so with a glass in one hand and horns raised in the other, we remember our fallen brothers with a...smile. And maybe a cranking-up of the volume.
Thanks for listening, everybody. A happy holidays to all of ya..."

"By making the song available for free, we hope to help Nelson Mandela with his campaign to get across the message that no one is safe from infection," drummer Roger Taylor said in a statement. "We have to be aware, we have to protect ourselves and those we love."

At this point we do not know what happens regarding the Kamelot tour... It is surely not as easy as Melissa states below.

Well, please read their official blahblah about dropping out below.

Melissa: "This is the hardest decision I have ever had to make because its not something I necessarily want to do, but it is something I feel I have to do. I have decided to leave Visions of Atlantis. There are a few reasons why, but primarily it has to do with where my priorities are at the present time. This doesn't mean that I will stop making metal, but my preferences, needs, desires have shifted now. And honestly, I don't want to write music with a group that Wolfgang isn't a part of.

I want to also apologize for those who were excited for the Kamelot tour. But it sounds like the guys are going to find another singer to fill the slot. I feel most bad about this because I was looking forward to meeting so many of you and seeing our friends/fans again.

I want to thank everyone for supporting VoA over the last few years and thank the guys for everything! It's been a blast! To all the friends/fans, it has been great getting to know you. Thanks for everything!!"

Wolfgang: "After months of thinking about the pros and cons, I finally have decided to leave VoA. I wanna express that I leave VoA without any hard feelings or any fights involved, it's a personal decision, not really dealing with the relation to anybody else in the group. I know I owe VoA a lot, it has given me great tours, a great possibility, perfect support from Napalm, I saw places I'd never seen in my life and I've played crowds bigger than any crowd I'll ever play again. And I've met a ton of great people, and had a blast drinking with the guys ;)

I especially feel bad for Mario, who was already eager to start the songwriting for the next album, and has been my main partner for what turned out to be my songs on Trinity. Needless to mention all the improvements he brought for the Harbi tracks.

I don't feel creative in a VoA context any more. All the stuff I've written since Trinity doesn't fit to VoA at all, as naturally, I cannot go less heavy than let's say 'Wing Shaped Heart' and I've found myself happier with heavier music. And I know that there's a certain limit to where you can push VoA music without being too far off from what was created by the previous line-ups. I analyzed 'Cast Away' pretty well, and tried to discover the core of the music, without the production and arrangements & add my own style to forge my Trinity songs, which turned out well, and I'm still happy with them. But on the other hand, I cannot stand behind certain other parts of the VoA-Legacy or present with all I got, and with the labelling it brought with it. I guess even if we had written a Deathmetal-album, everybody still would label VoA a 'version II' of some Finnish band I highly dislike, just because of the music composed on the first album and the promotion done on the second one. Trinity has no influence except our own, and certainly is no 'version II' of something, but too many people are either deaf or still associate the current line-up with previous VoA recordings automatically, therefore I think that VoA might never get the attention/credibility it earned with great parts of Trinity.

So yeah, good luck to the guys & thanks to everybody cool I've met or the VoA-fans around the globe I've met."

Visions Of Atlantis now seeking replacement for Melissa.

Scott Goldberg of the Digital Media Wire reports that an anonymous reader tipped Bob Lefsetz, author of The Lefsetz Letter, yesterday about an interesting development in the live music world: "Zeppelin just confirmed for Bonnaroo. They can't officially announce until after the London gig so pass it on! Also Metallica is confirmed on the bill too!"

Goldberg adds: "Anyone who has experienced the unique event that is Bonnaroo (or its younger sibling Vegoose) knows the four-day Manchester, Tennessee show's trademark is its eclectic mix of bands. Considered 'the largest hippy festival in the world,' as Andrew Stockdale, lead singer of Wolfmother said onstage last June, the festival organizers always manage to add plenty of non-hippy artists. In 2007 there was also the addition of a 'classic' billing, the re-emergence of The Police."
